The Institute of Black Culture, Media and Sport requires volunteers to work on all aspects of “The African History of Sport” documentary feature film and learning pack, recently funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Please apply by May 30, 2015. During the two year production schedule, volunteers can select attachment to the following trades, provided they are operational; bearing in mind that not all film production stages operate simultaneously:-

Two Project Management Volunteers Required

Two volunteers are required to assist the project manager perform the following duties:

  • Admin
  • Staff, trainees and volunteers recruitment.
  • Coordinate project activities and meetings.
  • Enforce and monitor health and safety procedures for staff, trainees and volunteers.
  • Assign and monitor production staff
  • Monitor trainees and volunteers
  • Select and reconnoiter locations
  • Purchase, rent, hire and monitor supplies, including equipment, production space and studio rentals.
  • Evaluate production stages

Ideal candidate

  • Should be interested in film making and be willing to learn how to supervise and coordinate pre-production, production and post-production activities such as production schedules, shooting, editing, production of the learning pack and screenings.
  • Candidates should have working knowledge of black history;

Additional competences

  • Volunteers require good admin and ITC skills
  • Reliability;
  • Leadership: willingness to offer opinions and make creative decisions;
  • Self-control—composure at all times, particularly  in very difficult situations;
  • Rigour;
  • High stress tolerance—ability to accept criticism and cope with mundane stressful situations.

Lines of communication

  • Volunteers are expected to communicate first and foremost with the project manager. The project manager’s position is accountable to both the chair and the management committee. He/she is expected to liaise with staff, trainees and volunteers as well as suppliers.

Working conditions

  • Flexible hours
  • Will be expected to work some week-ends and late nights
  • Post holder is expected to work mainly from home and occasionally from location.

Position 2

Two Volunteer Researchers Required

Two volunteers are required to assist research into ancient African sports data and artifacts; identify, analyse and collate materials on Neolithic hunting tools, sports and leisure activities in ancient Egyptian and Nile Valley Civilizations; provide relevant and appropriate sources of interviews, photographs, footage and online images; advise management committee, production staff (film director, editor and camera operator) on relevant historical data, actors and other creative personnel as or when required to do so; and assist scriptwriting.

Additional tasks

  • Identify relevant documents, books, artifacts, photographs, other online images and archive footage from BBC and other sources.
  • Identify appropriate interviewees, actors/actresses and children;
  • Conduct film interviews;
  • Provide training supervision opportunities for two trainee researchers and two volunteers;
  • Present and refine research findings in academic prose;
  • Assist preparation of learning pack;
  • Evaluate project stages of completion.

Ideal Candidate

  • Research experience.
  • Love and keen knowledge of sports, particularly black sporting achievements;
  • Reliability, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations;
  • Good ITC skills and an ability to write clear prose;
  • Scriptwriting experience (optional);

  • High competence in English
  • An understanding of archive/ museum research procedures;
  • Self-control—ability to maintain composure in challenging situations;
  • Rigour;
  • High stress tolerance level.

LINES OF COMMUNICATION

Position 3

Two Cinematography Volunteers Required

Two volunteers are required to assist cinematography or camera operation. This audio-visual trade comprises shooting/filming artifacts, documents, photographs, interviews and simulations.

TASKS

  • Liaise with production crew to plan, design, arrange and deliver shooting activities.
  • Collaborate with technical trainees and volunteers.
  • Liaise with Director and production manager to purchase, rent, hire and monitor gear and supplies, including equipment and studio rentals.
  • Help organize images, sound and lighting production requirements.

Ideal candidate

  • Some film production experience;
  • Interest in film production;
  • Driver’s license (optional);

Additional Competences

  • Reliability,
  • Self-control—composure in very difficult situations
  • Rigour
  • High stress tolerance levels

LINES OF COMMUNICATION

  • Volunteers will liaise with the camera operator only.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Post holder is expected to work on location and in studio.

  • Position lasts for 4 weeks

Position 4

Two Volunteer Film Editors Required

Two Volunteers are required to assist film editor. This specialist and highly technical computerized trade consists of assembling and editing audio visual footage, music, sound and graphics into a high quality audio-visual product.

TASKS

  • Liaise with director and production manager to handle and deliver footage, as well as other relevant material which enable editor to meet deadlines.
  • Assist with renting, hire and monitor editing supplies, including equipment, production space and studio rentals, in consultation with editor and chair.
  • Assist with graphics production;

Ideal Candidate

  • Interest in developing or demonstrating audio visual editing skills.
  • Ability to do good graphics;
  • Reliable and works to deadline;
  • Willingness and ability to work late or start early.

Additional competences

  • Reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations;
  • Willingness to take and offer creative opinions and directions;
  • Self-control—ability to maintaining composure in very difficult situations;
  • Rigour in completing work tasks to deadline;
  • High stress tolerance levels.

  • Volunteers are fully accountable to the editor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position 5

Four Marketing & Promotion Volunteers Required

Four Volunteers are required for marketing and promotion. This position is responsible for maximizing demand for the African History of Sport documentary and learning pack; by targeting relevant sectors with promotion and publicity materials.

TASKS

  • Liaise with chair, to compile a list of existing or key target markets and festivals;
  • Research additional market potential e.g. schools, colleges, sport clubs, governing bodies , anti-racist campaigns etc.;
  • Assist production of publicity and promotion materials;
  • Assist liaison with web designer and provide materials for website.
  • Assist arrangement of screenings;
  • Assist development and design of long term marketing strategy;
  • Help evaluate project stages of completion.

Ideal Candidate

  • Marketing/promotion qualification or considerable experience;
  • Ability to collect feedback data

  • Reliable—ability to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent English language skills;
  • Attractive personality and sociable;
